As the cast sang, "We're all in this together," during the summer musical finale, it seemed as if the audience agreed. The production, based on the highly successful Disney made-for-TV movie, "High School Musical" [HSM], was adapted for the stage and recently made available for public performances. People came by the hundreds to see the performance, more than doubling all previous box office numbers. The support was unexpected, overwhelming and greatly appreciated.
Directing his fifth summer musical, Jason Olson took on an ambitious project - forty teenagers bringing to life the celluloid characters with whom so many were familiar. Three adults joined the cast, and a half dozen crew members rounded out the production. Kay Williams Prunty of Worthington choreographed many of the dance numbers, with Samantha Vaselaar and Jarod Boltjes choreographing the remaining three. Linda Kingery was the musical director, working on vocals and running the score throughout the performance.
The cast included: Courtney Marshall, Lee Stover, Sarah Jensen, Brandon Roth, Lizzie Wetering, Jon Konz, Samantha Vaselaar, Courtney Hoogendoorn, Barb Runia, Eldon Vaselaar, Ben Salter, Kaitlyn Konz, Kyle Henning, Jarod Boltjes, Steve Skoog, Thai Hua, Collin Lynn, Tom Mammen, Megan Henning, Matthew Cook, Anneli Dudley, Jill Honermann, Leslie Stover, Jase Pater, Chantel Heeren, Natalie Cook, Alissa Sauer, Amber Preuss, Sierra Heeren, Natasha Polzine, Tayla Edgar, Annie Zaske, Nicole Runia, Alycia Lyons, Brianna Lutmer, Emily Lyons, Amanda Schnyders, Cheryl Polzine and Ryan Slusher.
The HSM backdrop was created by Paige Kilgore. Stage Director was Jill Spieker. Sound board was run by Kevin Gengler. Light technicians included Pete Jensen and Jason Cook. On tickets were Peg Carrier, Connie Hoffer, Deb Lutmer and Renee Bullerman. The usher coordinator was Brenda Beyer. A special thanks to the administration for making it possible to pump air conditioned air into the gymnasium the last three performances, which made the experience much more comfortable for the cast, crew and audience. As always, the Adrian School janitorial crew were amazing and helpful throughout the summer practices and run.
Thanks to the enthusiastic response to HSM, and continued increasing support of the summer musicals performed by the Adrian Area Theatre, be sure to look for another performance next summer!
