The City of Adrian’s nitrate plant is temporarily out of service due to mechanical breakdown that occurred early the second week in April. A replacement part has been ordered but may take up to a month to be delivered to Adrian. During this time, nitrate levels may exceed the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) drinking water standards regarding safe levels of nitrate in drinking water. Excessive levels of nitrate in drinking water can cause serious illness in children under the age of six (6) months. The levels were tested the week of April 14 and nitrate levels were still within tolerance limits.
The purpose of this notice is to encourage parents and other responsible persons to provide children with an alternate source of drinking water. Local and State health authorities are the best source for information concerning alternate sources of drinking water for infants.
During the time the nitrate plant is out of service, the City of Adrian/Adrian Public Utilities will provide bottled/distilled water, for drinking purposes, to all infants who are six months of age or less, to mothers who are nursing these infants and to pregnant women.
Distribution of this water will be available thru a voucher/certification procedure. Anyone who meets the criteria and wishes to obtain bottled water must contact City Hall, during business hours, to complete the necessary form to obtain a voucher.
Contact the Adrian Power Plant at 507-483-2680 or Adrian City Hall at 507-483-2849 for any questions. If concerned about your safe levels please consult your physician.
