A memorial service for Evelyn Marie Miller, age 83, will be held today, Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m., Worthington, MN, with Father Larry Brixius officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Worthington. Evelyn died Friday, November 6, 2009 at Dougherty Hospice House, Sioux Falls, SD.

Evelyn was born on February 6, 1926 in Wilmont, MN.  She attended Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish School, in Wilmont.  In her younger years, Evelyn worked at a variety of jobs in the Wilmont and Worthington area.  During World War II, she lived in Minneapolis and worked at a munitions plant.

Evelyn met John P. Miller from Iona, MN in 1942.  They were married in Wilmont on July 12, 1949.  The couple farmed in Iona for the first years of their marriage before moving to Wilmont in 1954.  They settled in Worthington in 1956, where Evelyn and John raised their family at 1825 First Avenue.  During this time Evelyn worked at Campbell’s Soup and provided cleaning services for families and St. Mary’s Parish.  She went on to establish an in-home day care center from which she retired in 1991.

Upon retirement, Evelyn cared for her husband, who was failing in health.  After John died in 1993, she continued doing the things she enjoyed, which included visiting family and friends, needlework, playing bingo and cards, and trips to the casino.  She was also an avid fisherwoman who enjoyed reading and doting on her cat, Moky.

During the past year, Evelyn moved into assisted living at Golden Horizons in Worthington, and for a short while, she resided at the South Shore Care Center in Worthington.  In her final weeks she received respectful and loving hospice care at the Dougherty House in Sioux Falls.  Evelyn was a strong and fun loving woman who enjoyed life to the fullest.  She valued her faith, her family and loyalty.  No matter how difficult life was, she persevered; standing by the people she loved and having fun in the process.

Evelyn was preceded in death by John, her beloved husband of 44 years; and by her parents Anna and Leo Reker and brothers Edwin, Clarence, and John.

Evelyn is survived by daughter LaVonne Summers of Estherville, Iowa; son Gary and his wife Cheryl of Humboldt, Iowa; son Dennis and his wife Christine of St. Paul, MN; daughter Debra and her partner Russell Reese of Worthington, MN; and daughter Shelly Sipma and her husband Ron of Alvord, Iowa; ten grandchildren: Julie, Laurie, Sherrie, Michael, Jason,

Heather, Heidi, Lara, Jana, and Jamie; twelve great-grandchildren: Justin, Jordan, Brook, Jaren, Charissa, Chole, Jana, Shana, Clinton, Christopher, Owen, and Hallie; and two great great-grandchildren: Evelyn and Gavin.
