January 28th, 2013 will always be a special day for Ellsworth native and long-time resident Jan Stoll and her 8-year old great nephew, Devin.
Jan has diabetes and suffers from neuropathy, nerve damage, in her legs and feet. This complication of diabetes has caused weakness and severe pain in Jan's legs. She uses a cane when she walks to help steady herself.
While using a cane is helpful, falls are not completely avoidable. On January 28th, Jan took a bad fall and was unable to get up from the floor by herself. Devin jumped into action. He pushed the button on Jan's wireless emergency response pendant and then went to the communicator device, which is similar to a two-way speaker, to tell the Cooperative Response Center associate that his Great Aunt needed assistance. The associate was able to contact people on Jan's emergency contacts list who could go over to assist her.
