The Adrian Dragon baseball season got underway on Monday - March 18 - 2013. The Dragons finished the 2012 season with a 7 win and 12 loss record overall. In Red Rock Conference play Adrian had a 4 & 6 record giving them 3rd place in 2012. Adrian lost to MLBO in the opening round of Section 3A playoffs last year 4 to 1 on a controversial call as the Wolverine hitter was granted a 3 run homerun on a ground rule double. Adrian will be trying to rebound from that opening round loss in 2013!
In 2013 Adrian returns one Senior to the 2013 roster. Five Seniors who started as Juniors in 2012 have decided not to play baseball in 2013 which opens the door up for a youth movement for the Dragons in 2013. Senior Nate Loosbrock will return at second base for the Dragons and this season will mark his third year at that position. Nate hit .318 in 2012 with 14 hits in 44 at bats and was 4 for 4 on stolen bases last season. Loosbrock also pitched 10 innings of relief in 2012 striking out 12 with a 4.70 ERA.
Along with Senior Nate Loosbrock for the Adrian Dragons in 2013 will be Juniors Nick Reyne, Jacob Bullerman-Diekmann, Jordan Dingmann, Jordan Bertrand, Ian Ruppert, Trey Henning, and Andy McCann. Also battling for starting positions will be Sophomores Tony Lynn, Tony Sieve, Brady Lonneman, Cody Polzine, Carter VanDyke, and Quinn Cleveland. Freshmen players for Adrian will be Logan Rogers a returning varsity starter for Adrian, Hunter Heitkamp, Nolan Rogers, and Michael Pruess.
Coach Kevin Nowotny returns for his 20th year as the Adrian Dragon baseball coach. Gregg Nelson will be returning for his 18th year as the Adrian Dragon Assistant baseball coach.
When asked about the 2013 season Coach Nowotny mentioned that in 2012 the Dragons committed 72 errors in 19 games for a 3.78 per game error average. That will be his biggest priority in 2013, trying to cut down on the unearned runs. Also in 2012 Adrian battled sore arms and tired arms and arm injuries in their pitching staff. In 2013 Nowotny feels his pitching staff has to be in better shape to stay away from any arm problems. “We have a nice group of Sophomores and Juniors to go along with our lone Senior Nate Loosbrock. This years team has great team speed and we can build off of that.
In 2013 the Red Rock Conference should be wide-open mentioned Coach Nowotny. “If we can get our pitching staff in shape, and fix our defensive mistakes from last year, I like our chances this season in the Red Rock conference!” “Then to be successful at the end of the year in Sections the hitting will have to be coming around also!”
Adrian opens the 2013 season at home vs Luverne on April 2 and then travels to Jackson on April 4th.
