Funeral services for Irene Bickel, age 92, of Aberdeen, SD, will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, August 23, 2014, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with Pastors Tim Sersen and Liz Dieseth officiating.  Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Irene died Sunday, August 17, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Irene was born to Alfred C. and Bertha (Bogenhagen) Rossow on March 3, 1922, at Herreid, SD.

She attended McKinley County School, graduated from Herreid High School in 1939, attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen for one year where she received her teaching certificate, and then began teaching in rural schools in the Herreid area.

Irene spent one summer at Camp Crowder, MO, while Henry Bickel was stationed there.  The next summer they were married on June 26, 1943, at Hopkinsville, KY.  While Henry was in the U.S. Army, Irene worked in the Post Exchange; both were located at Fort Campbell, KY.  During Henry’s service overseas, Irene resumed her teaching in Campbell County.

In August of 1945, after Henry returned from the Armed Forces, they farmed on the Bickel homestead near Herreid, SD, for 22 years.  Her greatest joy, as a devoted wife and homemaker, was raising her three daughters.  In 1949 they sponsored John Birzits, a displaced person of World War II and a native of Latvia.  John remained an integral part of the family.  They also hosted Naaman Laiser, a Wartburg Seminary student from Tanzania, Africa, during the summer of 1960.

Irene was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary.  She was active at Peace Lutheran Church (Herreid) serving as a Sunday school teacher, officer of WELCA, and treasurer of the congregation.

In the fall of 1967, Henry and Irene moved to Rapid City where they lived for 22 years and continued their service at South Canyon Lutheran Church.  In the summer of 1989, they moved to Aberdeen and became members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where Irene participated in Mary’s Circle.

In February of 1999, Henry and Irene became residents of Bethesda Towne Square where Irene lived for ten years.

Her husband Henry, her sister Alice Young, and her brother Marvin Rossow preceded Irene in death.

She is survived by one sister Elva Baumann; three daughters: Mary Jane (Henry) Peterson of Underwood, MN, Formerly Adrian, MN , Joye Lynn (Alan) Hoerth of Aberdeen, SD, and Betty Mae (Donald) Edwards of Weddington, NC; four grandchildren: Paul (Lyndy) Peterson of Sioux Falls, SD, Grant (Keri) Peterson of Menomonie, WI, Jill (Anthony) Galante of Algonquin, IL, and Jacqueline (Douglas) Schile of Apple Valley, MN; and nine wonderful great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or a charity/organization of your choice.
