Wabasso shuts down Adrian with strong first quarter

The Rabbits of Wabasso scored 20 points in the first quarter, en route to a 34-0 win over the Adrian Dragons last Saturday afternoon in Wabasso.

Wabasso received the ball first and ran right down the field, scoring in four plays.  The point after was good, making the score 7-0 Wabasso just 1:24 into the game.

The Rabbits kept the pressure on the Dragons, forcing Adrian to punt after just three plays on their first offensive possession of the game.  This time the Dragons were able to slow the Rabbit rushing attack down and force a punt after three plays.  Ian Stamer returned the punt 19 yards, setting the Dragons up on their own 40.

The Dragons were unable to capture any momentum and punted the ball back to Wabasso after three plays.  Wabasso then ran an eight play, 65 yard drive that resulted in a receiving touchdown.  The PAT attempt was blocked, leaving rthe score 13-0 Rabbits with 4:24 to play in the first quarter.

The Dragons were again forced to punt after three plays.  This time the Rabbits blocked and recovered the punt on their own 26 yard line.  Wabasso was able to keep the momentum on the first play of the drive with a 26 yard touchdown run.  The PAT was good, making the score 20-0 Wabasso with 7 seconds to play in the first quarter.

Both teams traded three and outs to start the second quarter.  Wabasso was able to gain one first down on their next drive before punting the ball back to Adrian.  The Dragons were finally able to get a first down on their next drive, but nothing more before punting.

The Dragons were able to stiffen and force a punt after two long first down runs put the ball at midfield.  Brandon Schnoor carried a third down hand off for 20 yards for Adrian, but the Dragons could not capitalize before the half was over.

The Dragons received the second half kickoff and had their best offensive possession of the afternoon.  The Dragons were able to gain three first downs and move the ball to the Wabasso 28 yard line before a fumbled snap was recovered by the Rabbits.

Wabasso took advantage of the turnover and ran an 11 play, 67 yard touchdown drive.  The drive ended with a six yard touchdown pass. The PAT was good, putting Wabasso ahead 27-0 with 2:47 to play in the third quarter.

Adrian failed to answer on their next drive, punting after gaining one first down.  The Rabbits kept the pressure on and scored after four rushing plays.  The PAT was good, making the score 34-0 Wabasso with 8:16 to play in the game.

Neither team was able to gain a first down the rest of the game, giving Wabasso a 34-0 win over Adrian.

Schnoor led Adrian in rushing, gaining 82 yards on 22 carries.  Logan Taylor gained 23 yards on 3 yards.  Stamer carried twice for five yards.  Andrew Bolluyt ran four times for six yards.  Carson Wolford had one carry for two yards.  Rilee Heidebrink, Isaac Bullerman, and Quentin Wolf each had one carry in the game.  Stamer completed one pass to Brady Vortherms for a 13 yard gain.

Logan Taylor led the Dragons in tackles with nine, including one for a loss.  Preston Nelson also had nine tackles.  Wolf tallied seven tackles, including two for a loss.  Lance Luettel also had seven tackles.  Isaac Bullerman, Vortherms, and Stamer all brought down the ball carrier three times.  Axel Martinez, Schnoor, Scot Edwards, and Dawson Frodermann each had two tackles.  Bolluyt, Brandon Boltjes, Beau Bullerman, Luis Gonzalez, Rilee Heidebrink, Tylor Hix, and Gabe Thier all had one tackle.

The Dragons (3-2) will look to get back in the win column this Friday when they host New Ulm Cathedral.  The game is scheduled for a 3:30 kickoff.
