They flew in front of homes, businesses, schools and Legions, a symbol of pride and patriotism serving their purpose well.  On Monday, September 9th over 400 faded and worn American flags were retired in a formal flag disposal ceremony hosted by the Lismore Schaap Galagan Post 636. Members from the Lismore, Adrian, Ellworth, Worthington, Brewster, Dundee, Fulda, Round Lake and Heron Lake Legions were on hand to take part in the retirement ceremony.   This is an annual ceremony held collaboratively by the Legions of Nobles County.  Flags that had been faded and worn were presented to the commander for final inspection and fitting disposal.  The Vice Commander states that the flags have served their proper service and should be fittingly destroyed and replaced.  Part of the ceremony as read by the second inspector reads, “these colors have become unserviceable in a worthy cause and they should be honorably retired from further service.”  A formal retirement ceremony is the only proper way to dispose of an American flag.

The timing of this ceremony is appropriate as we mark the 18th anniversary of the attacks on 9-11.  This American symbol of unity and strength became our nations emblem more than ever following that horrific day and the days, weeks and months following.  Who can forget that iconic photo of the New York Firemen raising the American flag in the middle of the rubble that was once the Twin Towers?  As President Ronald Reagan once said, “When we honor our flag we honor what we stand for as a Nation — freedom, equality, justice, and hope.”

These flags that were retired served their purpose well and with the help of area Legions were retired with a proper ceremony befitting their significance to our nation.  Anyone with flags which are in need of proper disposal are encouraged to contact their local Legion Post.  The Posts will hold the flags until the next retirement ceremony.
