Dragons fall to Minnesota Valley Lutheran

The Dragons gave up a  13-6 lead early in the third quarter by giving up 24 unanswered points to the Chargers of MVL last Wednesday night in New Ulm.

The Chargers started the game with a successful onside kick.  They were able to gain one first down on the drive before safety Ian Stamer intercepted a third down pass to get the ball for the Dragons.

Adrian was unable to gain a first down on their first offensive possession, punting after three plays.  The Dragon defense then forced a punt after three MVL offensive plays. Adrian was able to gain their first, first down on their next drive, but nothing more before punting on fourth down.

The next Charger drive took the game into the second quarter and the Chargers down to the Dragon 14 yard line.  The Dragon defense was able to keep MVL out of the endzone when Brady Vortherms broke up a fourth down pass.

A 21 yard run by Brandon Schnoor got the Dragons into better field position to start the next Dragon drive.  They were unable to take advantage after a fumble put them in a third and long forcing a fourth down punt.

The Chargers went three and out to give Adrian the ball back quickly.  Adrian put together an 11 play 82 yard drive that ended in a Schnoor touchdown run.  Schnoor had a reception of 37 yards and a run of 21 yards to highlight the drive.  Vortherms converted the point after attempt, making the score 7-0 Adrian, with 35 seconds to play in the first half.

The Chargers refused to go to halftime quietly.  A run that went down to the Dragon 30 yard line as time expired had a late hit penalty on the Dragons.  The penalty set up the Chargers on the 15 yard line for one untimed down to end the half.  The Charger QB found a receiver in the endzone for a score.  The PAT failed, leaving the halftime score Adrian 7, MVL 6.

The second half started out well for the Dragons as Preston Nelson intercepted a MVL pass on the third play of the half.  The Dragons used the good field position to score, when Schnoor carried from one yard out.  The PAT failed, leaving the score Adrian 13, MVL 6.

The Chargers would answer quickly when a WR screen turned into a 53 yard touchdown pass on their next drive. A successful two point conversion put the Chargers up by a score of 14-13.

The Dragons gave the Chargers the ball back when they fumbled the ball.  MVL took advantage and scored again on their next drive.  The two point conversion was successful, giving MVL a 22-13 lead.

The Dragons moved the ball on their next possession, but a fourth down pass came up four yards short of a first down, giving the ball back to MVL.  The Chargers scored one more time in the game and made the two point conversion for a final score of 30-13 MVL.

Offensively, the Dragons were led by Schnoor who had 27 carries, 219 yards and two touchdowns.  Stamer carried seven times for 36 yards.  Isaac Bullerman ran three times for three yards. Logan Taylor, Preston Nelson, and Quinten Wolf all carried the ball one time in the game.  Taylor had a 4 yard run, while Wolf and Nelson both went for three.

Stamer completed seven passes in the game for 101 yards.  Vortherms caught four of them for 47 yards. Schnoor had a 37 yard catch.  Grant Jansma caught one for 10, while Taylor caught one for seven.

The Dragon defense was led by Nelson with nine tackles and an interception. Wolf had seven tackles.  Scot Edwards brought down the ball carrier five times.  Isaac Bullerman and Jansma each had four tackles. Lance Luettel, Stamer (interception), and Taylor had three tackles each.  Andrew Bolluyt and Tylor Hix both had two tackles. Axel Martinez, Schnoor, Dawson Frodermann, John Heidebrink, and Daniel Leiva all contributed with one tackle.

The Dragons (4-4) are home for the first round of section playoffs on Tuesday.  They will host RTR.
