Mistakes hurt Dragons in loss to Canby

The Adrian Dragon football team hosted the Canby Lancers last Thursday night.  The Dragons had a 12-7 halftime lead but were unable to hang on, falling 14-12.

The Dragons opened the game on defense.  On the second play from scrimmage Marshall Wagner picked off the Lancer pass to give the Dragons the ball on the Lancer 23 yard line.  The Dragons were unable to take advantage, turning the ball over on downs before gaining a first down.

Adrian was able to force a turnover on downs of their own when the Lancers went for it on fourth down and failed.  The next Dragon drive started on the 50 yard line.  Adrian lost two yards on their first two plays before Ian Stamer passed to Brandon Schnoor down the left sideline for a 52 yard touchdown.  The point after touchdown was no good, leaving the Dragon lead at 6-0.

Canby moved the ball down the field on their next offensive possession setting up a first and goal from the six yard line.  Adrian’s defense stiffened up and kept the Lancers out of the endzone keeping the six point lead.

The next Dragon possession was derailed when a Dragon fumble was kicked backwards before being recovered by Adrian.  The play lost 13 yards and the Dragons were unable to make up for it, eventually punting the ball back to Canby.

The Lancers took the ball for a 11 play, 51 yard drive that ended in a touchdown.  Their PAT was good, giving them a 7-6 lead with 2:35 left to play in the second quarter.

Adrian answered quickly with a touchdown of their own.  The drive amassed 64 yards and took eight plays, ending when Schnoor found the endzone on a four yard run.  The PAT again failed, leaving the score 12-7 Adrian.

The Lancers ran only one play from scrimmage before the horn sounded, ending the first half.

The Dragons started the second half on offense but had to punt after three plays.  On the punt attempt, the snap was dropped and recovered by the Dragon punter, giving Canby the ball at the Dragon 33 yard line.  Adrian was able to keep the Lancers out of the endzone as Logan Taylor put pressure on the QB, forcing an errant throw that Schnoor picked off.

Adrian moved the ball out to the fifty yard line before they were again forced to punt.  This time the snap went over the punters head, giving the Lancers the ball on the Dragon 20 yard line.  Canby wasted no time scoring when the Lancer running back took a toss down the right sideline for a 20 yard touchdown run.  The PAT was good, giving the Lancers a 14-12 lead.

The Dragons were unable to shift momentum as they were forced to punt again after three plays.  The snap was muffed again, this time setting the Lancers up with a first and goal from the two yard line.

The Dragon defense fought and held the Lancers when the third down carry was fumbled and recovered by Marshall Wagner.  Adrian again got the offense rolling, taking the ball from the Dragon three yard line down to the Dragon 25 yard line.  The mistakes continued as Adrian was flagged for a 15 yard penalty forcing the Dragons to punt.

The Dragons were able to force a Lancer punt, but on the first play of the next Dragon possession, they fumbled giving the ball right back to Canby.  The Dragons held the Lancers out of the endzone and got the ball back on the Lancer 29 yard line with only 55 seconds left.  The Dragons moved the ball out to the fifty yard line before time ran out, giving Canby a 14-7 win.

The Dragons were led offensively by Schnoor who had 102 yards on 26 carries and a TD.  Schnoor also caught one pass for 52 yards and a score.  Dakota Schnoor carried eight times for 21 yards. Wagner had six rushes for 21 yards.  Stamer rounded out the rushing with one carry for 12 yards. He also completed two passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.  Wagner completed one pass for four yards.  Dominic Canales had one catch for 32 yards, while Stamer caught one for four yards.

The Dragon defense was led by Preston Nelson who tallied nine tackles including two for a loss.  Lance Luettel brought down the ball carrier eight times with one TFL.  Taylor was credited with five tackles.  Scot Edwards had five tackles including one TFL and a sack.  Stamer, Canales, Christian Weidert, Wagner (TFL INT), John, Schnoor(TFL INT), and Skylar Dingmann all had three tackles to round out the defense.

The Dragons travel to Wabasso Wednesday night, October 17,  to take on the Rabbits.
