Working on coming together

The Adrian Ellsworth girls basketball program opened their 2019-2020 season by making the drive to Sleepy Eye, MN to compete against Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s in a tip off tournament on Friday, November 22. With only two short weeks to develop a brand new program, the Dragons fell short of the Knights by a final score of 59-41.

Coming together and figuring out how one another plays was a set back for the new program and didn’t help in the outcome of the game. Along with broken defense, and only making one field goal shot the whole first half, the St. Mary Saints were able to shoot 47% from the field, accomplish 12 steals, and make it to the free throw line 25 times during the night.

Saint Mary’s, Madison Mathiowetz, gave the Dragon defense a run for their money. Putting up 26 points, grabbing 19 rebounds and tallying 7 steals, the Dragons fell short in coming up with a way to stop to her.

On the offensive end, the Dragons struggled with finishing a bucket. The girls shot only 24% during the night. Ashlyn Meester led the charge for the Dragons with 12 points. Bailey Lonneman also helped the team by tallying ten points for the night. Lonneman also aided the team in out rebounding the Saints by grabbing 12 of the teams 50 for the night.

The game was an eye opener for the program on what needs to be worked on in order to be successful this season. The girls look forward to getting back into the gym and getting to work.
