Dragons beat RTR in Section 3A opener ~ Adrian Advances to Section 3A Semifinals

The second-seeded Adrian Dragons advanced to the section 3A semifinals with a 11-1 win in six innings over the three-seeded Edgerton/SWC Dutchmen.

The Dragons were able to keep the Dutchmen off the scoreboard in the top of the first despite three walks. One runner was picked off of first and the other caught stealing to end the inning. With two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the first, Brent Hokeness singled.  He advanced to second on a wild pitch before Lance Luettel reached on a HBP.  Grant Jansma then sent a ball passed the left fielder, scoring both runners.  After one inning of play, the Dragons led 2-0.

Jansma (starting pitcher) allowed one base runner on a walk before striking out the next two batters to end the top of the second inning. Marshall Wagner led off the bottom of the second with a base hit.  He stole second base and later scored with two outs when Ian Stamer singled.  Stamer then stole second but was stranded there to end the inning.  After two, the Dragons lead was at 3-0.

Jansma worked a 1-2-3 third inning.  The Dragons kept scoring in the bottom half.  Hokeness led off with a single and stole second.  Jansma reached on a dropped third strike to put runners on first and third.  Courtesy runner Dawson Krahling stole second before Brandon Schnoor walked on a wild pitch that scored Hokeness.  Wagner then sent a ground ball to short that was misplayed, allowing him to reach base.  After a runner was picked off, Nathan Rahe sent a single over the third baseman’s head, plating Schnoor and Wagner.  After four innings the score was Adrian 6 Edgerton/SWC 0.

The Dutchman got on the board in the fourth when a lead off double scored on a two-out single.  The Dragons answered in the bottom of the fourth.  Noah Reyne reached on an eight-pitch walk.  Hokeness singled and both runners stole to put runners on second and third with no outs.  Luettel sent a ground ball to second, scoring Reyne.  Then Jansma senot a ground ball to short, scoring Hokeness.  The Dragon lead stood at 8-1 after four innings.

One batter reached in the top of the fifth for E/SWC, but nothing more. The Dragons went down in order in their half of the inning.

Jansma sent the Dutchmen down in order in the top of the sixth inning.  The bottom of the sixth started with a Stamer walk.  He stole second, which was followed by a Reyne walk on a wild pitch.  Reyne caught the catcher napping and stole second base on the play.  Hokeness was issued an intentional pass to load the bases.  Stamer scored on a wild pitch. An error by the shortstop scored Reyne and put Jansma first.  After a fielder’s choice retired Hokeness at home, Jansma scored on a swinging bunt by Rahe to end the game via 10-run rule.

Jansma had two hits (2B), three RBI, and scored a run in the game.  Hokeness was two for two with three runs scored. Wagner had a hit and scored twice. Rahe had a hit and two RBI. Stamer had one hit, scored one run, and drove in one run. Hokeness, Krahling, and Kremin all stole a base. Reyne, Stamer, and Wagner each stole two bases.
