A Mass of Christian Burial for Edward Thraen, age 90, of Iona, MN, was held Friday, April 22, 2016, at St. Columba Church, Iona, MN, with Fr. Gregory Parrott, Fr. Anthony Pick, and Fr. Timothy Biren officiating.  Burial was in the St. Columba Cemetery, Iona, MN.  Edward died Wednesday, April 13, 2016, as the result of an automobile accident in Sioux Falls, SD.   

Edward was born on October 18, 1925 on the family farm west of Iona, Minnesota to Joseph and Mary Kellen Thraen.  He grew up on the family farm and attended Country School District #68.  Ed enlisted in the United States Army on November 27, 1945 and served in Japan. He was honorably discharged on August 5, 1947.  He and Marilyn Kempton were married in Miami, AZ.  Following their marriage they made their home in Miami and Ed worked with his brother, Bud and his uncle Frank at an auto dealership.  He and Marilyn later divorced.  Ed then moved to Casa Grande, AZ and worked for the United States Post Office as a clerk. Ed and Vivian Schwartz were married in October 1984 in Yuma, AZ.  They made their home in Casa Grande.  Ed retired in 1992 after 20 years at the Casa Grande Post Office. After Ed retired they spent summers in Slayton and winters in Arizona. Vivian passed away on August 10, 1995.  Following Vivian’s death, Ed remained in Slayton.  He was a member of St. Columba Church in Iona.  Ed enjoyed spending time with family and friends, planning family get-togethers, and visiting with people.  Ed will be remembered for his zest for life and his always-present smile.

Survivors include his daughter, Shelley (Renae) Carmicino of Los Angeles, CA, six siblings, Eva Anderson of Sioux Falls, SD, Dorothy Sturges of Slayton, MN, Jim Thraen and his wife, Marian of Morris, MN, Sister Alice Thraen of Rochester, MN, Betty Rooker of Ripley, MS, and Rex Thraen and his wife, Suzanne of Phoenix, AZ, two sisters-in-law, Barb Thraen of Minneapolis, MN, and Janice Thraen of Iona, MN, and several nieces and nephews and their families.  He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Vivian, infant sister, Sharon Thraen, two sisters and their spouses, Leonarda (Nart) and Ernest Van Klei, and Marion and Elmer Whaley, four brothers, Ray and his wife, Bev, Bud and his wife, Evelyn, Ally, and Delbert Thraen, three brothers-in-law, Bill Anderson, Orville Sturges and  Jack Rooker.
