The Lismore Legion Hall was “bursting at the seams” again when local folks, out-of-towners, and many former residents of Lismore gathered on Memorial Day to remember those who have died for our freedom. The Auxiliary, American Legion, and Sons of the American Legion (SAL) had a well-planned program, which included several songs and patriotic readings and prayers led by Father Colletti. Gloria Wieneke sang Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA. Chuck Hoffman and Avis Stoffel read a long list of deceased veterans from our area and gave special recognition to the recently deceased veterans, namely Florian Loosbrock and Harry Spidel. Michele Wieneke quietly accompanied them on the piano. Deb Lutmer read a poem written by Kay Cox from 1996 titled, “Remembering”. Darwin Veld announced the names of the scholarship recipients: Alexia Kemper (daughter of Chris & Mindy of Lismore) and Jamie, Brianna, and Kelly Newman (daughters of Bob & Gina Newman of Wilmont). The American Legion Post #636, S.A.L., Auxiliary, Buck & Rita Krogman family, Earl & Joyce Erdman family, and the Clair & Dorothy Springman family fund those scholarships. Frank Kemper, President of the SAL, presented a check to the Legion for $3000. Members and guests processed to all three cemeteries where a twenty one-gun salute was given and Taps were played. A potluck dinner was served at the Legion and very well attended. It was a wonderful day to remember and honor those who died for our freedoms.
