Dragons finish strong at Sections Edwards Qualifies for the State Track Meet

After his first shot put toss, Scot Edwards made his end game known at the Section 3A Track and Field Meet in Luverne. Edwards had a powerful performance and was able to secure a second place finish, sending him to the state meet at Hamline University in St. Paul.

In the event, each thrower gets 3 throws.  If a thrower is in the top 9 in one of the throws, he moves on to the finals. Edwards was ranked second in the section coming into the meet, but Edwards wanted more. After five throws, Edwards had the top throw. However, the returning section champion from Wabasso gave one toss that bested Edwards and the rest of the field. At the end of the day, Edwards threw 47 feet, 6 inches.

Many other Dragons had great performances in the heat. The next best finish belonged to Moriah Bullerman. Competing in an event that she continued to improve in throughout the year,  she placed 6th in the open 800 meter run. Bullerman was able to hold on to the pack and gave herself an opportunity to grab a section medal. She finished with a personal best time of 2:31.

The Dragons had a set of three relays and a thrower, who all had solid performances on the warm, late May afternoon. The 4×100 meter relay of Hannah Henning, Brianna Reckamp, Bailey Lonneman, and Kendra Frodermann, had a strong last leg from Frodermann that led to a 54.9. This was one of their better runs of the season. The 4×200 meter relay team of Henning, Bullerman, Lonneman, and Frodermann also competed well.  They placed 10th in a very competitive field, running 1:54. The strongest relay of the day for the Dragons was the 4×400 meter relay. The team of Bullerman, Reckamp, Lonneman, and Frodermann stayed very competitive throughout the race and missed medaling in the event by .6 seconds to place 7th overall. The Dragons ran the 1600 meters in 4:28.  Finally, Sammy Wieneke returned to the Section 3A Meet for the second straight year. Wieneke placed 10th in the Section throwing 86 feet, 7 inches.

On the boy’s side, seniors Dakota John and Christian Weidert ended their high school careers competing at the section meet. Weidert competed in the open 400 meter dash. Weidert was off to a strong start and maintained the pace to place 10th overall with a personal best time of 55.2. Finally, John competed in his last triple jump of his career. John jumped a season best 37 feet, 10 inches. His leadership, dedication, and hard work has not only propelled him in the sport, but also his teammates and their development. Both John and Weidert will be missed next season.

Scot Edwards will be throwing this weekend at the State Meet. Good luck to Scot and congratulations to all of the track and field athletes.
