Dragons fall to Sleepy Eye

The Dragon football team’s struggles continued last Friday night in Sleepy Eye.  The Dragons were unable to contain the Indian’s running game in route to a 44-19 loss.

The first quarter saw Adrian receive the opening kickoff, only to go three and out after a holding penalty set the Dragons back.  The Dragons held Sleepy Eye to one yard on their  first two offensive plays.  But the onslaught started on the next play.  Sleepy Eye ran off right tackle for a 58 yard touchdown.  The PAT was blocked to keep the score at 6-0.

Adrian answered the score with a score of their own on their next possession.  The Dragons used a 17 play, 76 yard drive to tie the game.  The touchdown came on a 1 yard run from Ryan Wieneke.  The PAT was blocked, keeping the game tied at six.

Sleepy Eye would need just five plays to score again, this time on a 33 yard run.  The two-point conversion was successful, making the score 14-6.

The Dragons moved the ball into Indian territory on their next possession, but a lost fumble ended the possession.  Sleepy Eye again struck quickly as a 44 yard run set up a two yard touchdown.  The PAT was good, making the score 21-6 with 8:04 left to play in the second quarter.

Adrian was forced to punt on their next drive.  The Dragons then were able to stop Sleepy Eye as the Indian running back fumbled.  The fumble was picked up by Wieneke and brought out to the Dragon 48 yard line.  The Dragons were able to move the ball following the turnover, but a fourth down interception ended the drive.  The Indians were able to drive down and kick a field goal with two seconds left in the half, making the score 24-6 Indians.

The Dragons would not fair any better in the second half.  Sleepy Eye scored on their first and second possessions of the half.  An Adrian fumble was sandwiched in between the scores.

Adrian did force a turnover on downs in the third quarter, getting the ball back on their own 40 with 1:02 left to play in the third quarter.  The score at the time was 37-6, Sleepy Eye.

The Dragons opened the fourth quarter with a touchdown drive.  The score came on a 33 yard Wieneke pass that was caught by Brendyn White.  Dominic Canales made the PAT to make the score 37-13.

Adrian then attempted an onside kick.  The kick was recovered by the Indians and returned to the Adrian 21 yard line.  The Indians would score again to make the score 44-13.  Both teams then put the JV teams in the game.  Adrian played well and scored a touchdown on a Marshall Wagner two yard run.  The PAT failed, leaving the score 44-19.  That would be the final as neither team scored again.

Offensively, the Dragons handed the ball off to ten different players.  Rushing totals were; Dakota John- 19 carries 56 yards, Landon Rogers- 9-55, Brandon Schnoor- 11-56, Nick Harder- 4-14, Wieneke- 7-34 TD, Corbin Bircham- 6-20, Canales- 4-39, Preston Nelson- 1-1, Logan Taylor- 2-6, and Wagner- 3-19 TD.
