Third quarter dooms Dragons in loss to Dawson Boyd

The Adrian Dragon football team was within one score of a high powered Dawson-Boyd team at halftime.  The third quarter saw the Blackjacks pull away by scoring 31 points.

The game started with the Dragons getting the ball.  The Blackjack defense quickly forced a three and out.  Dawson-Boyd moved the ball on their first offensive possession.  The Dragon defense would stiffen to force a 4th and 21 from the Dragon 32 yard line.  The Blackjacks overcame the down and distance for a 32 yard touchdown pass down the right sideline for the first score of the game. The PAT was good making the score 7-0 Blackjacks.

The Dragons threw an interception on the third play of the ensuing drive.   Dawson-Boyd would score quickly as their senior running back bounced of a tackle and ran 55 yards for their second touchdown.  The PAT was again good, 14-0 Blackjacks.

Adrian moved the ball on their third possession, but punted after one first down on the drive.  The Dragon defense forced a turnover on downs as the Blackjacks went for it on 4th and 7 from their own 35 yard line.

The Dragons were able to take advantage of the short field with a Brandon Schnoor one yard touchdown plunge.  The drive was highlighted by runs of 22 and 11 yards by Dakota John.  The PAT failed, making the score DB 14 Adrian 6.

The Blackjacks answered the touchdown with a touchdown of their own.  This time on a 29 yard pass down the middle.  The PAT failed making the score 20-6 Blackjacks.

The following Dragon possession started with a 27 yard pass from Marshall Wagner to Ian Stamer.  Runs of 10 and 11 yards by John put the Dragons in the redzone.  Wagner would find Stamer again, this time for a seven yard touchdown.  The PAT again failed, leaving the score 20-12 DB.

The Dragons would get the ball back with 1:08 left in the second quarter when Wagner dropped into coverage from his Outside Linebacker position to pick off the Blackjack pass.  The Dragons could not get anything going as the Blackjacks picked off a Dragon pass as time expired.  At the half, Dawson-Boyd 20 Adrian 12.

The third quarter proved to be disastrous for the Dragons.  The Blackjacks scored quickly on their first possession and wouldn’t look back.  They scored a total four times in a quarter in which the Dragons only gained two first downs and turned the ball over once.  Going to the fourth quarter the Dragons trailed 51-12.

The Dragons scored to open the fourth quarter on a John one yard plunge.  Schnoor had a run of 18 yards in the drive.  The PAT was unsuccessful, leaving the score 51-18.

The Blackjacks would score one more time in the game.  The final score ended at 58-18.

Offensively, John had 20 carries for 74 yards and a touchdown.  Schnoor carried 13 times for 48 yards and a touchdown.  Preston Nelson carried once for two yards.  Dawson Krahling totaled three carries for two yards.  Carter Braun rounded out the rushing with one carry for two yards.

Wagner was six of eleven passing for 78 yards and a touchdown.  Trace Kremin caught three balls for 38 yards.  Stamer caught two for 34 yards and a score.  Schnoor caught one for six yards.

Defensively, the Dragons were led in tackles by Lance Luettel.  Luettel had six tackled including two sacks. Logan Taylor and Axel Martinez each had five tackles. John and Scot Edwards tallied four each.  Kremin, Preston Nelson, and Devin Frodermann all had three tackles.  Wagner (interception)  and Brandon Boltjes each brought down the ball carrier twice.  Stamer, Andrew Bolluyt, Schnoor, Isaac Bullerman, John Heidebrink, Bryce Wilson, Nick Sjogren, and Skylar Dingmann all had a tackle in the game.

The Dragons will look to rebound Friday at home as they take on the TMB Panthers.
